Artist Statement
As I move towards a sense of maturity and gain greater confidence in my work, I look forward to moving past training assignments and further into the realm of Art. My study of the figure has been approached in the manner of my former athletic training, ceaseless and absolute practice. I wished to study and truly understand the human form, so I assigned myself painting series that dedicated themselves to that end and worked for years. When that knowledge was not sufficient, I returned to sculpture in order to study the figure in 3 dimensions. That knowledge was still not sufficient, so I returned to anatomical studies with physiological classes and pilates training. Finally, after nearly 18 years, I feel a burgeoning sense of knowledge along with an ever deepening passion for the figure. My landscape studies were not however approached with such rigor and instead were allowed to breathe and undulate into their own forms either as stand alone pieces or combined with the figures. In the midst of these studies, I became dissatisfied with the quality of tube oil paint and its' non eco friendly nature. I therefore taught myself how to mull pigments into paint by hand and how to make varnish from pure damar resin. In the ensuing years, at times Art was created, but to now move forward and out of training is to now move freely into the realm of ideas.
